June 26, 2020:
It’s a surreal feeling when you travel to a new part of the world. You get to explore your favorite parts, soak up the views, heart-warming people, the homely places and then it’s time to say “a hui hou” (until we meet again). It was 4:45 am as I was sitting outside of Safeway with Isaiah, drinking a cold Starbucks coffee as he smoked his cigarette. It was still dark, there was a strong, cozy breeze starting to rise. We had 30 minutes before I had to go to the airport. I looked at Isaiah, barefoot and wearing his cowboy hat, the wind gently wisping his long hair amongst his tired face… and I looked at my surroundings… at the Safeway parking lot and I just started laughing. It was then that I realized that you can experience unconditional love no matter where you are or what you seem to be doing. God is with you in those simplest moments… are you with Him? I looked back on all of the memories I made in Maui and held the visions close to my heart… tenderly overflowing with gratitude. Most of the time, when I leave somewhere I’ve traveled to, it feels like I’m parting with a lover. Taking the ‘good,’ romanticizing the ‘bad.’ It’s bittersweet. I gave my heart to the mountains, I kissed the trees, I let the waves caress me… and now it’s time to let go and wander on.
